The seasonal phenomenon occurs when dry desert air blows toward the ocean, creating a fire hazard in Southern California. Some 1,220 homes and 4,270 residents were under mandatory evacuation orders, with another 1,136 homes and 3,976 residents under evacuation warnings, Cal Fire spokesperson Thomas Shoots said. Southern California has had a mild fire year in 2023, after unusually heavy rainfall that included the first tropical storm to reach heavily populated areas in the state in 84 years.

In 2019, their family packed up and headed to Pennsylvania but arrived to a cabin in disrepair. We really didn't want our kids living in that type of environment. Since our Poconos cabin was smaller, we decided to get rid of almost everything — we really didn't care about a lot of our possessions. We arrived to a cabin in a state of disrepairMy family and I drove down to the Poconos in a vintage camper that we bought in 2016. In December 2022, we moved from the first cabin into the third cabin we bought.

Gavin Newsom signed a bill Monday to ban school boards from rejecting textbooks based on their teachings about the contributions of people from different racial backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities. Many of the new restrictions enacted by conservative-dominated school boards have been over textbook representations of sexuality and LGBTQ+ history. A 2011 state law requires schools to teach students about the historical contributions of gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. After it was blocked, Newsom weighed in with his disapproval of the bill's failure to advance, and lawmakers revived it. Republican state Sen. Shannon Grove, who authored the bill, later amended the bill to protect victims from being criminalized.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Some people seeking the newest COVID-19 vaccine are running into high demand, insurance headaches and supply delays coast to coast. But some people have had to cancel appointments because their insurance hasn’t updated the billing codes to cover the vaccines. And in some places, there are no available nearby vaccines: A search in Juneau, Alaska, through the federal government’s website shows no available appointments within 100 miles. For others, the shots were covered by insurance without issue, but appointments were canceled by their pharmacy due to supply delays. Walgreens and CVS confirmed that delivery delays to some stores across the country had led to canceled appointments.

The legislation would rezone land owned by nonprofit colleges and religious institutions, such as churches, mosques, and synagogues, to allow for affordable housing. An affordable housing project in a San Jose church had to go through a rezoning process that took more than two years before it could break ground in 2021. It would only apply to affordable housing projects, and the law would sunset in 2036. Supporters of the bill said it could help add hundreds of thousands of affordable housing units to the state’s housing stock. Republican lawmakers and Democratic Sen. Marie Alvarado-Gil voted against it.

The attorney general, a Democrat, said the school district policy amounted to the “forced outing” of transgender students. It also might deter other school districts in California from imposing similar requirements. In recent weeks, the Anderson Union High School District in Northern California and the Murrieta Valley and Temecula Valley unified school districts in the Inland Empire have enacted policies similar to the one enacted by Chino Valley Unified. Orange Unified School District board members are also scheduled to consider a transgender notification policy on Thursday. Nearly a month into its school year, the Chino Valley Unified School District must shelve its notification policy and await further court proceedings.

The attorney general, a Democrat, said the policies amounted to the “forced outing” of transgender students. The other districts include Anderson Union High School District in Northern California and the Murrieta Valley and Temecula Valley school districts in the Inland Empire. Mr. Bonta filed his lawsuit in San Bernardino Superior Court asking for a temporary injunction against the Chino Valley policy and seeking a permanent order blocking it. He argues that the policy violates the California Constitution because it discriminates against transgender students, denies their right to education and violates their right to privacy. “This is another ploy to stop all the districts around California from adopting a common sense legal policy.
